The Maze at Windermere
by Gregory Blake Smith
5 storylines. 3 centuries. 1 city. It sounds like a pitch for a major action film or something, but it felt like a spiral, guided by an author who clearly LOVES literature.
There were echoes of each story in each other. But more than that, there were echoes of eras of literary storytelling and famous writers. (Plus actual mentions of Henry James, Emerson, Chateaubriand, etc).
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I never got confused by which storyline I was reading. I had absolute faith in the author throughout. And though I haven’t quite reckoned with the ending, I believe that the author is telling me all I need to know to understand.
Aside; what a joy to pick a book at random - no knowledge of the title or the author - for no reason other than it’s set in Rhode Island and be so impressed!
