Sunshine by Robin McKinley

5.0

There are no chapters in this book. It's just divided into four parts. (Sorry, this annoyed me. I like stopping at a chapter)

This story is all told not shown. It starts with a (very interesting) sort of info dump telling about the characters and then the world. The world is very unique and that's why I kept reading. There are others in this world like vampires and werewolves and years ago there was something called the Voodoo war which changed the world forever.

Once the story actually got going it was really good. I recommend reading part one (about a hundred pages) before you decide if this book is for you or not.

In part one, Rae (it took quite a while before we learned her name) is kidnapped by vampires. It was scary but not too bad. (And I'm a wuss)
SpoilerI really liked Con and how they're relationship slowly progressed, from completely not trusting him, to working together, to maybe being friends.

At the start of part two we have more explaining of the world and what has happened since the end of part one. Like at the beginning, I didn't enjoy this part as much, but I was more used to it this time. (and it didn't feel as long.)

In part two we learn more about Rae and her past and her real life. (Boy, this book made me crave cinnamon rolls!) We're also introduced to the Other police, the SOF. Part two she's still rather traumatized from her experience, but by part three, she's healing.

This book has incredible world building! Seriously, this should be a series and not just a stand alone. So much went into it. The magic system alone was amazing!
SpoilerI liked that Rae wasn't just a human, that she has magical powers. It was fun learning about them with her.

My only real negative was a couple of sexual references. I could've done without those.

At the beginning, I rated this book 3 stars. After part one, I upgraded it to 4 stars, but after an absolutely perfect ending it earned my rare 5 star rating.
