Witch and Wizard by James Patterson

On the plus side: the story moved along quickly enough that I almost finished it (though I did start to zone out towards the end... I listened to it as an audiobook. And side note on that: I HATE the sound effects incorporated into the book, because they always made me jump before I realized they were coming from the CD!) Anyway, the characters would have been likable if the dialogue didn't feel so contrived. I had a hard time identifying with them because their vernacular sounded to me more like an adult trying to imagine what it's like to be a teenager (who avoids cussing at all costs) than like an actual teenager. Not that I'm a big fan of cussing, but obvious substitutions for cuss words tend to make me roll my eyes. Just leave it out altogether if that's the alternative -- in my opinion.

The book included quite a few common elements from some of my favorite stories, but in a way that didn't really differentiate them, or explain them. For example, it described almost nothing about the "New World Order." It was a little hard to believe that the kids didn't know anything about it until they were abducted, especially when the One Who Is The One was already apparently so powerful. It's unclear what the prophecy about the two kids actually says until the very end (and even then I gathered it was only that they would destroy the New World Order, not how or why).

I did manage to overlook these things and still enjoy the book for the most part, but I never got sucked into the story.
