In the Country of Others
by Leïla Slimani
Prior to reading In the Country of Others, I had little to no knowledge of the conflict that was going on in Morocco after WWII. I found the book very difficult due to this reason. Midway through the book, the author explains that the Moroccans were forced to fight for the French or be put in jail. This one sentence really helped me understand what was happening in Morocco, what the people were facing, the separation between those who went to fight for the French and those that were fighting for Morocco, the conflicting loyalties for land and country.
This was a very interesting read, although, out of my comfort zone. The author really made me understand the oppression and poverty the people were experiencing. The roles and exceptions of women and the gender inequality, during this time were evident throughout the novel.
I did learn a lot about French colonialism in Morocco from reading this book, and for that reason I would recommend it.
