Victorian Short Stories of Troubled Marriages by George Gissing, Arthur Morrison, Ella D'Arcy, Arthur Conan Doyle, Rudyard Kipling

4.0

I listened to these while going through a Victorian-era, psychological realism binge that included a lot of Elizabeth Gaskell. Obviously these doomed relationships are trapped in the structures of Victorian England, but I found them all quite human nonetheless. They seemed like people you might meet today stuck in problems that only exist because they live in, as I said, Victorian England. This collection is an easy way to read a little of those big names from the era, and discover some lesser known writers as well.

Perhaps odd, but I thought there was a thematic link to some of the stories in Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected, where there are a lot of unhappy marriages.
