Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros

4.0

4.5 stars just based on vibes. This book is far from perfect, but I was fully in it and had an amazing time while reading this which is really all I want in a book. I have not been this invested in a book since the last SJM book. I spent every free moment I had reading this. At the half way mark I started panicking because I was not ready for it to be already half over. Now, if I were to like really look at this critically it would probably be more of a 4 star book. But like i said, I loved it so 4.5 stars all day.

- Plot: It was a little rough at times and confusing but once I decided to just go with it and not over think it it was fine. But I could not tell you much other than the main premise. the ideas were unique enough, but it was super predictable and there was a decent amount of fluff/filler but I was kind of ok with it. There were a few spots that felt info dumpy, and honestly if I had to take a quiz on these books I would 100% fail. There’s just a lot and I feel like I’d have to re-read to really understand it all.

- Romance: There were moments when it was amazing. But there were other moments where I was like man you guys really are acting like you’re in your early 20’s. Like some of the drama was so dumb but it fit their characters age so I wasn’t mad. But i kept thinking of the quote “Kim, people are dying” from KUWTK. Overall it was a super healthy relationship but communication could be better, although that was kind of the point because of all the secrets and stuff. I wouldn’t put Xadan up there with the top tier book boyfriends but he’s still in the top 20.

- Characters: The core characters were fantastic. Absolutely love all of them and am fully invested in everything about them. However, THERE ARE SO MANY SIDE CHARACTERS. This is my biggest critique because it’s hard to stay in the story when I constantly have no idea who the person is. Also it’s fantasy names so half the time I am pronouncing them wrong in my head and they end up gibberish. Between the people and dragons from the first book, all the professors, all the new characters/dragons/animals, and people from history I was lost in the sauce half the time. A guide needs to be added to the back or notes need to be taken because if someone said the name of any character other than the main ones I would have 0 recollection. I’m banking on the super dedicated book girlies making a character guide by the time the next book is coming out so I have it for the re read.
