The Word Is Murder
by Anthony Horowitz
I’m not an overly enthusiastic crime thriller/murder mystery person, but I will periodically read the genre sometimes. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the book for me.
Anthony Horowitz presented a fictionalized version of himself (or, if you will, presented a lie as a truth, but what is fiction anyway?). He laid out all the reasons that this plot of this book wouldn’t be popular as a novel (the crass detective has been overdone, nothing particularly unique about this case). And me, as the reader, found myself agreeing. If there isn’t anything particularly different or exciting about these characters...why do I care?
The one shining moment is when it all came to a head. I had a few theories on the end game, which Anthony the character voiced and were immediately shot down, so I will say that climax was a complete surprise to me. With that scene I almost upgraded my feelings on the book 3 stars. Unfortunately, the denouement killed all the excitement that I had felt from the climax and I just ended up with a meh feeling. Clearly, I finished the book so it wasn’t all bad, but more like when you mindlessly watch a vanilla, bland CBS show episode. You are paying attention to the plot, I suppose, but really it’s just background noise.
Maybe it’s because I’m an American and this was very British.
