A kingdom of Mischief & Memories by Shelby Cuaron is a refreshing adult fantasy romance with just the right touch of spice & worldbuilding to intrigue me.
I think Shelby is to be applauded for the work. Being an indie author means wearing many hats : writing, editing, marketing, promos etc... It's a LOT - and as a fellow Indie, I GET IT ! So I'm truly happy when I see a fellow author thriving & putting books out there because it takes a lot of courage, in many ways.
I enjoyed the characters - at times I wished to know more about certain ones (their thoughts, etc, like we know for the main character) ... but that's just because I'm a 2483938492 POV gal so sometimes following one person is hard, lol.
Though Maeve is the protagonist, there were other secondary characters that peppered the story; their backgrounds, backstories, 'classes' within society, beliefs etc made the world in which they live filled with diversity - which often isn't the case in many fantasy books.
I enjoy Shelby's descriptive style, how she manages to paint a picture of places, people, scents & landscapes without making me feel like I'm reading a description, if that makes sense - it just flows with the story, paints backgrounds in which characters move without being overbearingly complicated.
The story is interesting, though I definately feel like it truly gets explored in book 2, which I already started. This one feels more like a set up to the larger story telling, the larger plot (which I can't get into because SPOILERS).

Romance is present between Maeve and Hagan.
Though I liked him, I felt something was odd between them. I mean, they do get along & fight and have a push/pull thing going on which I was thrilled about... but idk, I knew from the beginning there was something about their romance which felt like there was more then met the eye. Given the visions, I felt like they had a past - and they did.
But then, I started book 2... AND WHOOO, Lukas?
I want to forget everything about Hagan.
He's too prince charming for me, although he knows what he's doing with his mouth... I want to know what Lukas can do with his blade hehe
ALSO MIKAEL ??? I want more of him (on me, in me, whatevs). I know he's kind of a jerk but HELLO I love tortured souls who are depraved and unapologetic about it.
