Edited to change to 5* - can’t stop thinking about it. - What a fun little book. Over the years I have attempted to read the LOTR trilogy with many failures, so I was always hesitant to pick this up. I expected long drawn-out prose with an unnecessary amount of detail, and instead was met with a tight and quick-moving plot. I really love the dynamic of the dwarves with Bilbo, and the narrator was light-hearted and fun. The biggest shock to me with this one is just how different the movies are from the book, and I am honestly quite sad that they didn’t stick more true to the story with the film adaptation as the added bits were so unnecessary. Overall, quite enjoyed this one. I do find it hard to believe though that this was written for children as the language is more ornate than what I would expect someone under the age of 12 (at minimum) to understand. I wish JRR Tolkien was able to keep the use of a tight, fast-moving plot with other books in the LOTR universe. Balin is for sure my favourite dwarf, was in the movies and is in the book as well. Read this physically alongside the audiobook by Andy Serkis - which I would definitely recommend. Andy is incredible.
