Beneath the Stands by Emily McIntire

3.25

I still love McIntire's writing style and her way of tying a story together, but this book didn't connect with me like I wanted. Beneath the Stands had a lot of tropes that I typically really connect with (age gap (slight), forbidden/taboo, small town), but for some reason I just couldn't connect with Eli or Becca.

I think part of the difficulty for me was this book takes place before, during, and after book one in the series, and I had a hard time reliving some of the things we'd already sorted out in book one. I also had a harder time getting into their romance than I expected - Becca and Eli clearly had chemistry, but it was difficult for me to believe their intense chemistry when we didn't get to see a lot of their transition from "hate" to "love". I also had a difficult time with these characters because I felt like they were both pretty selfish and didn't think about the people around them that they claimed to love...
