Reread 2023: My third reread, and I still really enjoyed this book on reread. This book is very much a Sci-Fi monster action book that paired up with Shark Week. Despite that love and enjoyment it needs to be noted that there are two flaws in my opinion. The two female characters Terry and Maggie are not depicted well at all. There shown as cruel and conniving women who are hard asses. That wasn't a flattering take and left a sour taste for me. Also the characters that are meant to be "bad" or "evil" come off as one dimensional. Examples are Bud, Heller, and Danielson. The flaws needed to be pointed out, but I still enjoy the book overall and found it a fun ride.
Reread 2020: With a reread of the new 2015 edition that includes Meg: Origins and revised writing this book is being bumped up to a 5 stars. While it stills suffer from sexism and over sexualization of female characters I enjoyed it a lot more on reread and found the new story added a lot. It still campy fun in the best way that quick and enjoyable to read through because it fast paced. Recommend the revised edition.
I enjoyed this book, because of the "science" and Jonas. The information about the Mariana Trench, megalodon, subs and scuba diving whether accurate or not was interesting. And I found Jonas a very interesting character. And parts of the story from the Meg view were cool. The female characters however were frustrating, you had Maggie, Jonas wife who was the hot, bitch, slutty, power hungry women. While Terry was the hot, tomboy, who was ball busting overly secretive feminist who thought all men are chauvinistic pigs. And there ends were bullshit a little. The twist with the Meg was cool, but the cliffhanger was frustrating.
