A Soul of Ash and Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout

4.0

Look, I think it’s disingenuous for JLA to call this a “fifth book” in the series, as there are only 12 chapters in the present (out of 500+ pages) and only 2 of those really advanced the underlying plot of the series. BUT all that said, if it was marketed plainly as a retelling of FBAA from Cas’ POV, I would probably be giving it 5 stars. I loved reading FBAA from the POV of a narrator with more knowledge of the history of Solis and the corruption of the blood crown. I also loved reading Cas’ struggles with being dishonest with Poppy during the first book. I think my increase in enjoyment is also due to progression of writing style of JLA. Overall, I loved it, but I am annoyed that it was released now (instead of just finishing the series and then doing a POV book), and I’m also annoyed about how it’s marketed as the “fifth book.” That said, if JLA wanted to release all of the books from Cas’ POV, I’d eat ‘em up and buy ‘em all.
