I realized I DNF'D this book years ago as soon as we were introduced to Glokta. His character description was that memorable even though I forgot about the rest. I must not have been in the mood for this story then because I was hooked this time around.
Even the characters that aren't that lovable were compelling. I knew I would be reading the rest of this series shortly after starting. I'm curious to see more world building and see how the characters develop.
I listened to the audiobook. The narrator did a decent job for the most part but some accent choices made me cringe. They were balanced on the edge of disrespectful stereotypes at times. Idk if it was a personal choice or if it's the norm but the way this narrator pronounced "grimace" sure made ME grimace every time the word came up. Yikes.
