I heard about David Joy and this book on NPR, and before I read the book, I read "Digging in the Trash," a piece Joy wrote for The Bitter Southerner. I thought "Digging in the Trash" was thought-provoking and insightful.
However, "The Weight of This World" was not for me. It's violent and graphic, and it was very hard for me to read. (This isn't my main critique, but this is also a very, very masculine book.) I was hoping the book would be more directly focused on the "urban-rural divide" Joy mentions in "Digging in the Trash." In some ways, the book does focus on this topic, profiling the lives and struggles of a population that most urban Americans don't think of. But this type of story, while real, important, and impactful, just isn't for me.
