A tragic tale about freak accidents that pushed teenagers to their absolute limits. And oh god, was it heartbreaking.

A little note. Contrary to the online discourse I’ve seen, I feel for Letty, deeply. As Victoire said, she only ever wanted a group of friends. A community of people that could be by her side, as she navigated the complicated world of translation at Oxford. She fought for her place at the Institute and then she fought again, to put her prejudices and beliefs aside, to truly be there for her friends. What did she get back? Racism, through an “us vs. them” mindset. It was always, “Let’s not tell Letty, she wouldn’t understand” and never, “Let’s tell Letty, she’s our friend; she would try to understand”. She was utterly alone, with no one to count on, because she was a white woman. And also because she was a white woman, everyone believed she’d “had it all”, so no one bothered to care deeply for her, the way she cared for others.
