Namesake by Adrienne Young

3.0

First off, I love Adrienne Young's writing. Every one of her books, I'm instantly drawn in, love all the characters, and want to live in the world she's created. I ADORED Fable. I thought it was clever, unique, just surprising enough, and loved all the characters and their complicated relationships and back stories.

That gave me pretty high expectations of loving Namesake and it was just...... meh. Trying to say this in a non-spoiler way, the plot just didn't make a lot of sense to me. There were a lot of actions that just kept making me stop and say "...but why". The "twists" seemed really obvious, and I felt like their were a lot of questions intentionally left unanswered because they would reveal the holes. Maybe someone can talk me through trade routes, merchant politics, gem economy, and trader codes and prove me wrong, I just feel like their was a lot of melodrama that could have been solved in simpler ways, and actions and relational issues that didn't fit characters personalities previously shown.

I have been (probably rightfully) accused of over-thinking things like this, and probably would have enjoyed it more if I didn't think about it and let myself just accept it, but where would be the fun in that.
