Nine Years Among the Indians, 1870-1879: The Story of the Captivity and Life of a Texan Among the Indians by Herman Lehmann

A perplexing read. A true story of a man in the late 1800s taken as a child by the native Americans and raised as one. 9 years later he was returned to his family. He writes this in his kate 70s and can’t seem to decide what to make of either side, either that or race was not taken into account back then. In one sentence he will call native Americans his family, and then call them the savages in the next. Then he’ll call people “white folk”, to turn around and refer to then as thieves and pale faces. Very interesting, but it doesn’t give great insight into either side.
