I went into this book with ridiculously high expectations because I absolutely loved House of Salt and Sorrows, but I wish I had treated this book as more of a standalone. The spooky, gothic vibe in the first book was immaculate, and although this book was unsettling in its own right, it fell a little flat in comparison. That being said, I think the direction this story went in was absolutely insane and unexpected, and I loved how effortlessly the mystery was unveiled.
This could easily be read as a standalone if you aren’t planning on reading the first book (although I highly recommend it!!!)
