Crown of Midnight by Sarah J. Maas

3.0

I'm a little disappointed. I had higher hopes considering how much fun I had with the last book. It felt like any time Celaena was about to make any kind of character development, it just got ripped away. She's a really toxic character and the lack of development in her is sad to me considering I want to like her. I don't like to excuse her toxicity with her trauma and I hope that somewhere in the rest of the series she can learn to grow, forgive, and confide. I am also noticing a pattern in Maas' writing is a lot of filler and things being slow and then BAM a lot happens in a short amount of time. This whole book felt like filler and then within the last 50-75 pages, a ton of conflict happens and then you find out "shocking information" - which if we are following along, is not really all that shocking considering how built up Celaena is. I'm hoping that the story flushes out more in the next book as I'm a little weary that it's going to drag and not fully flush itself out.
