I haven't read David Copperfield (yet -it's on my tbr) so I cannot speak on this being a modern adaptation of it. Regardless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a sad book, made even more so knowing that a lot of it is based on truth when it comes to the drugs pedaled by doctors to those in under-educated, impoverished areas. However, there is a hopeful undertone that is present and ultimately ends on an uplifting note.
