Wizard of the Crow by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o

5.0

The Wizard of the Crow is a wonderful mix of an absurd political satire and a both naive and complex fairytale. The way Ngugi weaves the various threads into a tangled tapestry which constantly unravels and re-ravels is something you don't see often and is the mark of a great epic writer. Added to all this is the fact that this novel is born out of the lived experience of his native Kenya, from which he was exiled for 22 years due to the political nature of his work.
