A Fate Forged in Fire by Hazel McBride
fast-paced
- Plot- or character-driven? A mix
3.0
I really enjoyed the developments between Aemyra and Fiorean (question: exactly how closely related are they?), but I didn’t feel the relationship was appropriately built over time to sufficiently create a sense of betrayal in the final chapters, or to really sell the original romance . I can’t put my finger on exactly what about this book misses the mark for me, because I love the Scottish Gaelic culture and the way Christianity versus paganism is essentially framed in fantasy. I think things just happen too quickly… usually I can’t stand when entire books cover mere days of repetitive talking inside a palace (cough cough Armentrout), but too much happens here that doesn’t feel earned or emotionally lived-in, if that makes sense. Aemyra goes through SO much trauma, and I don’t know why it doesn’t seem to land, but it doesn’t? I’m not sure I’m solid enough to read the next one; I’m just going to assume Fiorean is in some way being manipulated and will have to earn her trust back, idk. Maybe I will read the next one… I’m pretty dumb
