The Last True Poets of the Sea by Julia Drake

4.0

Violet Larken is raised with the knowledge that the Larken's are survivors. Her grandmother was the only survivor of a shipwreck and founded the town Lyric. Her brother Sam is struggling with depression, so Violet gets sent out from New York to spend the summer with her uncle in Lyric.

I was drawn to this because of the ship wreck. Nautical, ocean/underwater/lake and pirates are some of my favourite subgenres so that was good enough to me. I thought Violet was a realistic character. She had her issues but it was obvious where they came from and she was working through them in the story. The friendships she built and her relationship with her brother was really good to see. The hunt for the wreck and the history exploration was really interesting.

SpoilerThe star is being docked due to Sam being really annoying when he showed up. The way he was talking/acting was way younger than 14 I felt.

4/5 stars.
If you like Shakespeare retellings and contemporaries I'd recommend it. I can see why this topped so many people's best of 2019 lists.
