Persistence by Etta Pierce

5.0

Like the previous book, this continues with a darker theme, especially in the second half of the book. While a lot more action packed and emotional than I was expecting, I really enjoyed this book and this couple.

Bree was a spunky, determined, and resilient woman. I loved how she always said what she was feeling and didn’t hold back. Bree was an extremely resilient woman who survived a plane crash, surviving in a deadly jungle, and being kidnapped again all while dealing with intense and dangerous injuries. I liked that she was honest with herself throughout it and never gave up, she just kept fighting to survive.

Aavar has been the fun and annoying character so far in the series but we finally get to see the truth. Aavar desperately wants to be accepted and feel whole again after a tragic attack in his past. He may be goofy and fun, but he also hides a lot of hurt and pain under his smiles. Aavar was an extremely well written character and I really loved seeing him learn to accept himself and find love.

The first half of this book mainly focuses on getting to know these two, how they meet, and what they have been doing in the human colony since arriving. We get to learn more about the human colony, how it's changing, and more about the shilpakaari aliens culture. Also we get to see a new security force arrive with some very interesting characters, including the return of Vin and Pom Pom, who I love.

The second half of this book is where it gets darker and more intense. Bree and Aavar have to survive a plane crash, kidnapping, torture, and many dangerous wounds. It was a lot and very heartbreaking at times. I hated seeing Aavar fight his coil (mating) to their captor, Elaxi, who was a terrible woman who loved enslaving and raping other shilipakaari men. Because of how intense the situation was, Bree and Aavar’s relationship happens very quickly under stressful circumstances so we don’t get any really happy moments for them. I feel like we needed a little bit more happiness with these two to counter all the bad they dealt with, but I still enjoyed their story.

Overall, this was another great addition to this series. I am extremely interested in seeing what happens next and learn more about this corporation that is trying to kidnap the humans. Also I want more of Vin and Pom Pom because I love these two so much.
