I love when a book can simultaneously make me feel seen and also open my eyes up to new perspective, and that’s exactly what Maame did.

Though Maddie and I are different in many ways, there were also so many tid bits that I found relatable.  I had visceral reactions to her crippling anxiety, embarrassing reliance on google, and questions about depression, all while being the glue for her family.  I thought George did a fantastic job making the reader feel what it’s like to start to question everything and to figure out who you are.

Despite choices that made me want to slap Maddie upside the head, I felt like I understood her and still rooted for her every step of the way.

I really appreciated Maddie’s journey from the start to the finish, and that she acknowledges that who she is is not because of her current circumstances, but because of a combination of many experiences.

Just an all around good, moving, and well written coming of age story.
