Preferential Treatment by Heather Guerre
5.0
My reactions to reading the unfolding synopsis of this novel could easily be told in a meme: Billionaire Boss? Not interested. Makes a highly inappropriate offer to his financially struggling subordinate? Not interested. Boss want subordinate to domme him. Okay, now I am interested. And she pushes him to his limits by financially doming him. Very, very interested! If you are a fan of femdom or just want to give this kink dynamic a go, this fantastically written book is for you. If you like an alpha hero who Cannot. Feel. Feelings. then this book is for you. (Like most Billionaires. Mikhail was raised in a Russian orphanage and does not believe he has the capacity for love.) Even if, like me, you are not a fan of Billionaire boss books, this treatment by Heather Guerre is pretty unique. The fact that the person topping in this sexual arrangement is also the one without the financial power, that would be our gutsy cash-strapped office worker Kate, complicates the budding relationship is all sorts of delicious and though provoking ways. Both of their relationships to money is complicated. Working-class Kate in particular yo-yos back and forth between disgust over the existence of billionaires and a deep desire to finally have nice things. There is one luxury shopping scene which brought on the waterworks for both Kate and me. When she ups the financial domination game into forcing large charity donations, their roleplay raises questions around the morality of capitalism – and the hard limits of kink. I really appreciate that Guerre pushes against the sore spots the whole time this power couple are falling in love.
*Epilogue makes this is 4.5 but otherwise it’s a gold star effort.
