The Mountains Sing
by Nguyễn Phan Quế Mai
I wanted to love this. The novel explores a narrative that is missing in western literature, but the execution ultimately fell flat for me. The book flips between the POV of a grandmother and her granddaughter, but the characters’ development was so lacking that perspective flips were almost indiscernible. To me, the novel read as series of terrible events rather than the story of a family and a people.
