I actually give this a 3.75 but I round up.

This "go into the light" ghost story gives a unique twist to a stagnant genre. I could relate to the characters, even those I didn't like. I think the author does a great job in exploring grief. How do you grieve for someone when they're still technically around? More important, how do you move on?

What kept this from being 4 stars was the "after school special" feel to the trial. It's like the author is using this opportunity to tell Teens don't mix drugs and alcohol. It just seemed too stiff.

His death in itself is enough of a lesson as well as everyones grief. The trial where they're going on about if Logan had only known the consequences of mixing drugs and alcohol he'd never have done it seemed false and didn't mesh with the character the author created. Besides it's bullshit. He'd still have done it.

So I really liked it until it turned to a moralist's cautionary tale. And I still liked it, just not as much. I plan on reading the next two and recommend the first book.
