damestra 's review for:
The Girl Who Played with Fire
by Stieg Larsson
It's difficult to say how much my opinion of this book is reactionary to having just finished the second Dresden book, but it certainly is the polar opposite in terms of the depth, complexity, and resilience of the female characters. I am struck not only by how incredibly different each woman in the text is, but how utterly realistic they all are. Strong, stubborn, wilful, foolish, broken, and wonderful in turn, this book demonstrates not only the destructive power of misogyny (both casual and directed) but the numerous ways that male characters (and occasionally female characters) excuse the systems that support rape, violence against women, and human trafficking. I look forward to the third book in the series.
