Paris for One and Other Stories by Jojo Moyes
3.0
Rating short story collections is so difficult. My rating above reflects the average rating of all nine stories (as outlined in detail below). Some of the stories were good, some were real misses. I’m going to have to do each one individually so please bear with me.
Paris For One: 4-stars. I enjoyed the story. It was a light and fast read with likeable characters. I am glad that Nell came out of her shell. I was especially glad when she bought the charming pineapple dress. I really did enjoy this story!
Between The Tweets: 3-stars. This was an interesting premise. I didn't see the twist of who was behind the libellous account. Personally, I don't enjoy reading about infidelity and cheating partners so I guess it just wasn't my cup of tea, overall.
Love in the Afternoon: 2-stars. I didn't really get this?
A Bird in the Hand: 2-stars. Again, I don't enjoy "unhappy marriage/cheating" stories. I thought both of these characters were twats.
Crocodile Shoes: 4.5-stars. I really enjoyed this! The premise was great. I would have liked a full length book on this storyline alone.
Holdups: 3-stars. It was interesting (the banter with the robber) until they started being romantic... after that, it was just weird.
Last Year's Coat: 4-stars. I felt like I've read this before but it was really well done. The gesture of the Dad was lovely and I was really happy that Evie got her coat.
Thirteen Days With John C: 2-stars. This was just embarrassing and silly.
The Christmas List: 3-stars. I liked Ray and honestly, I liked the decision to just vanish to Spain. It didn't feel like there was quite enough here though.
In summation, I really hate rating anthologies. Toward the end of the book, I was falling into the author's style and perhaps that is what rendered them predictable. After all, she has a definitive style and most of these stories follow it. Some were better than others but overall, I don't feel like I wasted my afternoon!
I got this book for $4 at a book sale. I had never read any of the author's books before and I don’t reckon I will again. I'm not the target audience.
