Black Hole by Charles Burns

5.0

I will come out first and say that your experience reading this graphic novel will heavily depend on the way you view drugs (especially if you have used them), sexuality and even your metaphysical beliefs. The cinematic black and white aspect is a perfect element that ties into the novel’s disorienting and non linear narrative. I read some reviews where readers couldn’t connect well with the characters and I’m glad I did because this is very much a character-driven story. What at first seems to be the main plot, soon falls into the background of these characters lives which struggle through alienation, sickness, love and identity. I’ve had this novel sitting on my shelf for about 4 years and I’m happy I chose to pick it up now.
I respect the art of the graphic novel, even more so when it shows a seamless medley of writing, drawing and novel structure. It’s psychedelic imagery and character exploration guaranties a future reread.
