The Tatami Galaxy
by Tomihiko Morimi
The second stop in my Tomihiko Morimi project, Tatami Galaxy feels like an equally breezy, but more developed version of Tower of the Sun, with a similarly obviously flawed character that's maybe a bit less hateable but your enjoyment of the book and its brand of humor will live or die based on how much you can bear reading about guys that suck and revel in their shittiness, some of which crosses into bad "boys will be boys" territory. The eccentric supporting cast helps. This one has the "exploration of alternate timelines" gimmick that I think is used to good effect in multiple repeating passages, sometimes even series of pages, as the MC's lives converge and intersect, and there's a lot of nice easter eggs thrown in, plus it leads to a satisfying finale. Makes me appreciate the anime adaptation too, which did a great job.
