This is a challenging read but I’m so grateful that I read it. I’m in awe of the author’s resilience, bravery, and “candor” in the way she tells her story.
I noticed many of the lower rated reviews came from wanting the author to share more about growing up in the children of god cult (despite it taking up half of the book). Promotional materials make it clear that the book is about her experience in the army and the thread connecting the two.
I’m not sure how she could’ve been more honest with how she shared her experience growing up, and to ask for more sounds a bit like wanting “trauma porn”.
