Even though I was aware that this book is dark, I still wasn’t prepared for just how affecting it would be. Despite being so consistently sad, the prose (and translation) were treated with such care that I found so much tenderness, wistfulness and a bizarre beauty, beyond it being just flatly bleak.
This is easily one of the best works of historical fiction that I’ve read.
