The Trackers by Charles Frazier

As part of Hoover’s New Deal, Valentine (Val) has been selected to paint a WPA Post Office Mural in Dawes, Wyoming. He has been invited to stay with an eccentric married couple comprised of a young wife with a mysterious past and her politically aspiring, WWI sniper, rich husband. The ranch is managed by a crusty, horse whispering, get the job done no matter what ranch hand. As the mural is nearing completion, the wife runs off. Val is sent to find out why and bring her back. This is a well written story which explores trust, commitment, and just how someone will go to maintain their dignity. I am not a big fan of westerns. This felt similar.
