In The Darkest Midnight
by Grace Draven
“The people who can’t see past this are the clumsy ones, Jahna. The foolish ones, and most definitely the stupid ones.”
A short but sweet story that follows Jahna, a 15 year old girl in the nobility who's shy and bullied because of a birthmark covering part of her face. Through the years she develops a relationship with her brother's sword master, Radimar, who helps bring out her own confidence and security. The story spans several years including several time jumps that keeps everything moving smoothly. There is a final 8 year time jump that was a little jarring but made sense given their ages at the beginning of the story. This is very much a character driven story with bits of court action and a surprise appearance from a fan favorite from the Wraith Kings world.
“This is part of who you are, Jahna,” he whispered. “What makes you strong and resilient, gives you purpose beyond the arm ornament of some nobleman. You’re beautiful. Let no one make you believe otherwise.”
