Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher

5.0

Yesterday, my best friend told me to stop apologizing for all the things I didn't do while in the deepest, darkest days of my recent bout with major depression because - in her words - I "just could not even." This obviously struck me as the single greatest descriptor of depression I had ever heard and promptly caused us both to dissolve into hysterics.

Carrie's book was like that moment stretched out over 160 pages of honesty, wit, compassion, and - weirdly - faith. Faith in what? No fucking name for it, but that's the word I've picked because it's the only one that works. This woman is among the most incredible and inspiring AND FUNNY in this strange world (and I get to say that because I once asked her a question on a panel and then spent three full seconds taking a photo with her at a comicon SO YOU KNOW I HAVE THE REAL INSIDE SCOOP ON THIS LEGEND), and I look forward to devouring the remainder of her books.

Also: Five extra stars for her makeout scene with Belushi in Blues Brothers. (I'm a Chicagoan; this post-script is mandated by city ordinance.)
