Small Favors by Erin A. Craig

5.0

**Slight spoilers, but nothing major**

Small Favors was the perfect read for spooky season. There was an eerie, uneasy feeling throughout the entire story, and as someone who lives surrounded by woods, gave me the creeps at night. I personally am a relative scaredy-cat, but this story didn't terrify me to the point of being unable to finish it.

Ellerie Downing is an 18 year old doing all she can to help out her family in their small, isolated town of Amity Falls. Living off the land and certain supplies from a nearby city, the Falls is the only place Ellerie has ever known. But when their supply teams start being murdered in the woods, the whole town is set on edge. But there are things in the woods, things that will give you your heart's desire for just a small favor. But those small favors tend to add up, and accusations begin to fly. Will Amity Falls survive the winter, or will it fall prey to the creatures destined to destroy it?

As said before, this book set me on edge every time I picked it up. If you have ever walked deep enough into the woods to feel a little uneasy, either that you will stumble upon something or something or someone is watching you, it was easy to fall into that same feeling that the Amity Falls residents felt. Because of the world we live in now where most towns are not so isolated, we have technology, etc., I feel like the environment of the story also just immediately puts you on edge.

The characters were also very interesting. Ellerie's sense of protectiveness toward her family, though maddening sometimes, was exactly how I figured she would be. Her continuing faith in Sam really started to irritate me, especially when she learned that he tried to pawn her life for his. There were a few characters I was always hyper aware of, like Whitaker, Ezra (Ephriam), and Thomas. Since these characters posed the most suspicion for what was going on in Amity Falls, it made sense that they were always under scrutiny, but they were written so well that I wasn't sure if I was staring the answer in the face or not. I was still second guessing if the things I thought I knew would lead to the right answer up until the very end, which I always appreciate in a story like this.

I would highly recommend this book to any who enjoy stories that have twists and turns, and unsettling characters, events, and settings.
