Sorting Things Out: Classification and Its Consequences
by Susan Leigh Star, Geoffrey C. Bowker
A must-read for anyone considering working with or developing classification systems (read every one?) Or maybe not? Essentially the authors make the case that classification systems serve as invisible infrastructure that shapes the way we think about the world. They provide examples from health and Apartheid in South Africa, to illustrate the varying degrees with which the effects of classification systems can be felt. Will definitely write a blog post about this book so I don't forget some of the more specific points!
