Only Mostly Devastated by Sophie Gonzales

3.5

I really appreciate this book's stance on relationships between people who are out and people who aren't: they don't work. It's a little jarring to move from the pretty realistic depiction of a pair of young queer people trying to navigate this heartbreaking scenario (and hurting each other a ton) to the ending the genre demands.

Also. I wish the author of this book realized that you CANNOT leave a toddler swimming unsupervised in a fucking lake--or even a bathtub with like six inches of water--for any amount of time. No. Maybe the closeted person who's messing around with you on the sly really does plan to tell everyone you're his boyfriend--who knows?--but this is unforgivable artistic license.
