Creation Lake by Rachel Kushner

This is situated by its marketing as a "non-traditional spy thriller," and I certainly agree with that categorization. It's a non-traditional thriller in the sense that it's not really the least bit thrilling. It's contemplative, often dull, slow-moving, superfluous and just kind of a head-scratcher of a novel.

Lots of people liked this - it was even on the National Book Award longlist. It was a definite miss for me.
