This book was so refreshing. I loved how this universe had all of the epic fantasy gods and magic and creatures in the background but had essentially a workplace enemies-to-lovers letter-exchanging romance in the forefront. It's so interesting how our main characters were reporters, allowing us small insights into the war raging in the background, but maintaining almost a slice-of-life vibe in the forefront. I absolutely adore Iris and Roman. In fact, I think Roman might be the greenest-flag book boyfriend I have ever encountered (and he sounds like he looks like baby Rhys). I loved their love story, the gorgeous letters and articles they wrote, their banter, pretty much just everything. 

I am STRESSED by how this book ends, but I know that we need to see more about Dacre and Enva and one of them needs to be on the "inside" for us to see that. But it breaks my heart to see our characters separated with no typewriter between them. I am officially anti-Forest, because if he hadn't left in the first place, NONE of this would happen. And now that she's finally found happiness in all this darkness, HE TAKES HER AWAY FROM IT. smh. Although I have to say, they were all stupid to not evacuate the town earlier - it's not like they were of much help other than feeding the soldiers tbh.

Rebecca Ross is a beautiful writer, and she's now created two characters I care a little too much about. There's no way I am not picking up the next book immediately.
