Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar
4.0

This is an absolutely beautiful book. Every panel and all of the character designs are thematically beautiful and fitting for the time period and setting.

It’s wild that this and Marvel’s 1602 came out around the same time because it feels like both texts are less interested in the specific conceit and more focused on how this would affect a larger gallery of characters. To that end, had the story focused more on the ideological expression of this Superman, more than the what if delineation of a different timeline, it would have been better. Miller reached for The Dark Knight Returns and instead gets something lesser. Fun and beautiful, but lesser.
