The story is good and original but there is something about this series that doesn't work for me. At times it seems too slow, not moving forward then it speeds up but doesn't actually wrap up the thread.
For example, there is a lot of exposition about getting to hell what will or will not happen once they are there setting up the various stations and procedures and then running the gauntlet only to have it be partially successful so they must go back to planning, bickering about it, Alex mourning her choices, describing Dawes' cooking doing research, flashbacks to Alex's regrets in life, running through the ritual again and coming up with potential failure only to have something unexpected happen but after it's done the author reveals that the characters had planned the outcome and knew what to do when it happened.
There is also hints of romance and maybe I have been reading too many romantasies lately but nothing is acted upon. Maybe in book three.
What did I like? Uni life and an English Lit major. Mentions of the Smiths and New Order and Joy Division. Glimpses into the side characters life and motivations. The ending is a hats off to Shaun of the Dead. The writing itself is wonderful it's the pacing that irritates me.
Over all I would read part 3 if there is one.
