4.5

It's not the type of masterpiece that changes the way you see the world like a 5 star book does, but 4 is too low for how good it was. 4.5 is more appropriate.

The writing style has a reflective, ethereal sort of vibe that fits the mysterious and mystical subject matter perfectly. It switches between time periods and character perspective, which is a story structure I personally enjoy a lot.

It's very obvious at every point where the overall plot is going, but somehow that doesn't take away from the enjoyment at all. Finding out the details and backstory as you go along is the real focus, and there are unexpected twists that I never saw coming.

I definitely recommend reading this one. It's so well done I was surprised to find out it's only the author's second novel and that the first was published only a couple years ago. It has the feel of a book written by someone who has been churning out best sellers over the course of a long career.
