I had no idea what to expect from this - one of my "Long-neglected classics" reading queue - but what I found was a paradox of sorts. It's an incredibly pessimistic overview of life and of humanity, but told as a spectacular, masterful satire that has an oddly sunny mood throughout.

It's also a surprisingly quick read. I'm docking it one star for the pessimism, but this is not one to miss. 'Wish I'd read it earlier.
