Erasing Hell: What God Said about Eternity, and the Things We've Made Up
by Francis Chan, Preston M. Sprinkle
I think I was expecting a lot more than this book ended up giving me. It's really very short; you could probably read the whole thing in one afternoon if you wanted to. This book is, obviously, about hell, the things that go on there and who is a candidate for ending up there. I like that the facts laid out are heavily based in Scripture, but I feel like I could have handled a bit more discussion. I mean, the author shortens up some arguments quite a bit for the sake of the book's not becoming a tome, but at less than a hundred pages, I think I could bear up for more information. Also, there are times when the notes at the end of the chapter seemed to be longer than the chapter itself. After reading through the notes, I couldn't see why some of the information there was not presented in the original text with the original points. There are a few things that in this book that made me think differently: first, I never really spent a lot of time thinking about the eternal destinies of people I don't know. Secondly, I was very convicted about what Jesus says about sins that I normally don't spend too much time thinking about: speaking ill of others, neglecting the poor, etc. I have to say that a lot of things covered in the book seemed like common sense to me. But this book is definitely good for at least starting an intelligent discussion.
