The Jakarta Method: Washington's Anticommunist Crusade and the Mass Murder Program That Shaped Our World by Vincent Bevins

challenging informative reflective sad fast-paced

4.5

One of the saddest books I’ve ever read. The author does a great job painting the scene of the Third World and it’s optimistic view of the future, then details the process that it gets systematically destroyed. The book does a great job throwing in personal stories from the many people he interviewed so it doesn’t feel like you’re reading a textbook, and the author only includes straight facts, never offering theories or his own thoughts. The book is just the truth of what happened and also how it personally effected some people.

I’ve learned so much from this book but it was hard to finish due to the sad nature of it. The story of Washington’s plans to destroy any remotely (or perceived) left leaning governments and groups is a tough pill to swallow for those unaware of this part of America’s history, but it’s something I think all Americans should understand.
