The Eye of the World by Robert Jordan

5.0

A stunning beginning to what I can only imagine is an epic series. Jordan manages to straddle the line between taking clear inspiration from Tolkien and creating his own breathtaking world that feels fully lived in, dense, and interesting.

I have to say, I was surprised at how fast this went by (relatively speaking; it did take me over a month to get through). I had heard that Jordan's purple prose were a thing of legend, but The Eye of the World never dragged. It was dense, and there were certainly some chapters which reveled in slower pacing than others, but overall I don't feel like Jordan's writing got in the way of the plot or the pacing of the story. Maybe that will change as things go on, but in this opening installment, I was rather impressed with how he handled the structure of this story and the gargantuan world it's set in.

All I can say is: if you've been putting off reading this series, don't wait. Pick up a copy of Eye of the World and give it a read. It's definitely worth it.
