Les Trois Mousquetaires | The Three Musketeers
by Sylvie Thorel-Cailleteau, Michael York, Alexandre Dumas, Alexandre Dumas, Pierre Toutain-Dorbec, Giorgio Manganelli, S.M. Sheley, Philip Bates, S.N. Rizvi, Brett Helquist, Walter Covell
It's not a profound book, but at about 175 years old, there is a reason you have heard of if: it's swashbuckling good fun!
This could have been easily separated into at least 3 other books, and you'd have a good YA series. I really disliked the whole sections about 7/8 the way through the book on Day 1,2,3,4 of Imprisonment, etc. Impossibly slow and just kills and ruins the pacing, and incredibly unbelievable (or were people really that gullible back then, which I am thinking maybe they were). But, ugh, those chapters are why it was downgraded from 5 to 4 stars (and almost down to 3 stars, it's that bad). The women (and, well, many of the characters) in the book are vapid, doe-eyed simpletons, excepting the primary villain.
The other nit is the title of the book. There are dozens of musketeers, both for king and cardinal. D'Artagnan himself becomes a musketeer about 2/3 the way through book, so even if you only count the close friends, it should be the Four Musketeers.
But, mostly, don't expect subtle truths and deep meaning, it's fun.
